Writing Romance is Complex Fiction

Writing Romance is Complex Fiction

Hi everyone--I'm Tara Lain and i write The Beautiful Boys of Romance. I was having a conversation the other day with a friend who doesnt read romance. In fact, he doesnt really read
fiction. I was explaining the twists and turns of the plot of a new book Im
writing and I found myself telling him how very complex good romance is. I
listened to myself saying it and thought, son of a gun its true. Now I will be
the first to admit that most people dont think of our genre this way. They
think of romance as the simplest of fiction. Boy meets girl, boys loses girl,
boys finds girl again and they live happily ever after. Of course, in my case
its boy meets boy but the principal is the same. They call it a formula. But think about it. Virtually all
fiction has some formula. Certainly mystery has a lot of rules and suspense is
riddled with them. I guess you could argue that Joyces Ulysses had no formula, but maybe breaking the rules was a formula
of its own. Now, think about romance. We not only have to create an interesting
plot with three-dimensional characters who have problems of their own -- we
also have to make them fall in love! They have to fall in love somewhat
believably, have obstacles that keep them apart and make it appear at least for
a time that they wont get together, and then, in spite of it all, they end up
together.I thought about my newest release,F.A.S.T.Balls. In that book, the central conflict is between a gay firefighter and a homophobic firefighter who has been raised by his preacher father to believe that homosexuality is evil and that gay people are responsible for most of the ills of the world. How the heck do you get a guy like that to realize he's gay and fall in love with another man? That was my dilemma. Enemies to lovers of a very real sort.

Its been many a century since
“romance” was a tight formula plot with two-dimensional characters that always
ended in a wedding. In fact, we might argue, that today ours is one of the most
complex genres to write. But maybe we better just keep it between us! LOLWhile i'm here, i'd like to invite you to sign up for my email newsletter. It's mostly full of news about contests, games and chances to win books and prizes from me and other authors.

and surfing champion, Jerry Wallender, looks like a hero to the world, but he
cant see it. He keeps falling for these intellectual guys who end up making
him feel dumb and unneeded. On top of
that, Mick Cassidy, super-gorgeous firefighter and total homophobe, makes
Jerrys life miserable with his slurs. Then one day Micks nice to Jerry and,
at the Firefighters Ball, Jerry offers a helping hand and ends up with a
hand-job. What the hell is going on?Mick
Cassidy is great with fighting fires and solving math problems but rotten with
people. Raised by a gay-hating preacher, Micks carefully constructed world of
gay bashing starts to crumble when he meets Jerry, the nicest, kindest man hes
ever known. Micks never wanted a woman
and cant stop thinking about sex with Jerry. In fact, he cant stop doing it.
Does that make him gay? And if hes gay, what happens to his whole life? A
hook-up between sweet Jerry and mean Mick might be total disaster -- or the
smartest idea Jerry ever had.Straight nodded and positioned himself
at the foot of the stairs. Mick tested each stair before he applied
weight. One gave way but he jumped to the next. Heat searing now. He bent double and
moved like some round-backed animal up three more stairs to what would have
been the top if much had been left. Damn. Where was he? He pressed against the only wall not
burning and sidled his way down the hall to what must have been the bedrooms.
It seemed like it took a year of inching but he got to a door frame and looked
in. On the far wall, he saw what was left of a single bed like for a kid. Holy God!The floor of the room was mostly
missing. Burned through. He leaned forward. No. No, God. Lying on the floor a story below was a firefighter. It
had to be Jerry. Crumpled like some bad voodoo doll or something. His breathing
apparatus stuck out from under a burning board. The caved-in floor had caught
fire to the fabrics in the room and a huge blaze was consuming a couch and
fallen floorboards only feet from his head. No!Mick pressed himself against the wall
again and forced himself to go slow. If he died, so did Jerry. When he finally
got back to the stairs, he ran down, with charred wood cracking under his
boots. He hit the ground, pointed his arm, and ran toward the hall to the back
of the house on the first floor. He rounded a corner and staggered back. Flames
licked up the walls on both sides like an arc of fire. He crouched real low and
burst through to a short section of hall barely burning. Straight volleyed
through beside him. Then he stared. The space ahead must have been a family
room. Now it was pure inferno. He knelt and peered under the fire. Yes, Jerrys
body lay beyond a wall of flame. Micks heart and head disconnected. One wanted
to leap headfirst through the flames and grab that fallen body in his arms. But
the firefighters brain calculated. There was a chance of slipping through the
burn low and on the right side.Straight knelt beside him. Mick pointed
at the area and mimed his going through. He reached for the RIT Bag in
Straights hand. The man pulled it back and shook his head. What the hell? Mick
used his extra reach to grab the bag and pull. Straight pulled back.Mick screamed through the speaking
diaphragm. “What the hell?”Straight peered into Micks mask. “Our
chance. Leave him.”What? “No way.” He waved his arms
wildly. “Your fathers mission. One less fag.”Mick stared at him. Every ounce of blood
felt frozen. Everything hed been taught stared through his mask.
Discriminate…judge…despise…hate…and finally kill. The scream came from somewhere hed
never been. Some place in his soul that had never seen light before. “Ahhhhhhhhhh!”You

The so-called 'Indian Direct Selling Association' is part of a racket.

The so-called 'Indian Direct Selling Association' is part of a racket.

http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-08-07/news/41168043_1_direct-selling-industry-idsa-amway-india

'MLM Income Opportunity' racketeer, William Pinckney, arrested for fraud.

Faced with the very real prospect that the senior corporate officers of 'Amway India' might soon be sent to prison for operating a dissimulated pyramid scheme, the so-called 'Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA)' has lately succeeded in planting its reality-invertingpropaganda in 'The Economic Times of India.'

This begs the question:

How is it possible that the journalists, and their editors, at 'The Economic Times of India' can be so devoid of common-sense as to print the absurd 'Utopian Multi-Level Marketing' fairy story without any challenge to its authenticity?

Ilook forward to the day when, if approached by any more'IDSA'tale-tellers, Indian financial journalists, and their editors, will make it perfectly clear that, based on their knowledge of the fundamental characteristic which identifies: Ponzi schemes, pyramid scams, money circulation games, chain letters, etc. - namely, that all these frauds have no sustainable, or significant, source of revenue other than their own contributing participants - any so-called'MLM Direct Selling Income Opportunity'in which the overwhelming majority of its declared annualrevenue has not been derived from authentic retail sales of goods, and/or services, to members of the general public (based on value and demand), but rather from the participants'losing investment payments(based on the false expectation offuture reward)laundered as'direct sales to customers and end users,'is a dissimulated closed-market founded on the crackpot pseudo-economic theory that endless-chain recruitment + endless payments by the recruits = endless profits for the recruits, and is, therefore, fraudulent.

Bernard Madoff peddled ill-informed victimsinfinite shares of their own finite money.

Charles Ponzi peddled ill-informed victimsinfinite shares of their own finite money.

Consequently, unless the corporate officers of the so-called'IDSA'can produce solid independent evidence that their members' so-called'MLM direct selling income opportunities'really have had a significant, and sustainable, source of external revenue,no honest observer would be able to arrive at any otherlogicalconclusion other than the individuals behind these legally-registered corporate structuresare economicalchemistswho, just like Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff, have been secretly peddling ill-informed peopleinfinite sharesof their own finite money.

With an irony that is close to exquisite, according to the latest fraudulent 'ISDA' propaganda,'Direct Selling' is expected to grow by 15% in India over the next 2 years, whilst the corporate officers of the 'IDSA,' and those of its 18 members ('Amway', Herbalife,' etc.), are all dedicated to removing any fraudulent practises from their industry.Tellingly, the same sanctimonious gang of thieves have admitted (albeit indirectly) to be attempting to have their clandestine activities effectively placed above the criminal law in India. The de facto agents of US-based racketeers have infiltrated the democratic process in various Indian States and tried to introduce their bosses effectively-meaningless definition of 'direct selling' into proposed guidelines, ostensibly designed to prevent pyramid fraud. Thus, by the deliberate introduction of vague terminology, the proposed 'Direct Selling ' guidelines make no common-sense distinction between lawful authentic retail sales to members of the general public (based on value and demand), and unlawful investment payments (based on the false expectation of future reward), laundered as 'lawful sales to customers and end users.'

For decades, the bosses of ongoing major organized crime groups like 'Amway' have used a significant portion of their ill-gotten gains to finance what have been laughably referred to as'Direct Selling Associations' all around the globe. In reality, these legally-registered corporate structures' main function has been to prevent, and/or divert, investigation of serious fraud and isolate the beneficiaries from liability. When the wider-picture is examined, the so-called 'DSAs'have had precious little to do with lawful direct selling. This parallel labyrinth of centrally-controlled corporate structures has been obstructing justice since the 1960s. As such, the US-based so-called 'World Federation of Direct Selling Associations' clearly forms part of an overall pattern of ongoing, major, racketeering activity (as defined by the US federal Racketeer influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, 1970).

Senate Prepares to Desecrate Everything Patriotic Americans Hold Dear

Via-Freedom Outpost
I believe less in coincidences every day. It has come to my attention, through reading an article by Pamela Geller, which the full Senate may be voting on Syria on September 11th. I am shaking right now. I have not been this angry in a long time.
The Daily Beast reports: Senate Democratic leadership tossed aside the rules for moving legislation with regard to the resolution authorizing the use of military force against Syria, angering some Republicans and creating confusion on Capitol Hill in the run-up to the war vote.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee narrowly approved a modified war resolution Wednesday afternoon by vote of 10–7 with one member, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), voting present. The committee's action allows Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to bring the measure to the floor as early as Monday, following a break for the Jewish holidays.

That would allow a vote by the full Senate as soon as Wednesday, giving the Senate a chance to pass a war resolution before the House has a chance to craft and pass a resolution of its own. (Emphasis added) Wednesday is the 12th anniversary of 9/11. There is no guarantee that they will vote on that date and truly the senate is expected to approve a war resolution no matter what date they pick, but can you even imagine the irony? If the senate picks September 11th, 2013 to officially join Al Qaeda as allies I can imagine of nothing lower that they could do. Let's not forget that it is not only the day of the 2001 attacks, but it also the day that Americans died in Benghazi, Libya at the hands of Al Qaeda linked terrorists. September 11th is sacred to Patriotic Americans. It is a day we will never forget. To the senate it might just be another day at the office. So what if we join the people responsible for thousands of American deaths on the anniversary of when they waged full scale war on us? What's the big deal? That my friends is the attitude of many of our lawmakers at present. This is politics and it is one of the many reasons I have contempt and disgust for most politicians. When I say most, I am not talking about 51%. Oh no, it's more like 98%. These people are totally out of touch with morality and totally out of touch with the heartbeat of America. I don't give a crap if it's a republican or democrat. Many republicans are supporting war in Syria and it's not just McCain and Graham. This resolution will pass the senate with an unacceptable number of republican votes. And surprisingly there are some democrats that are breaking ranks on this issue, but there are not enough it would seem.Read more athttp://freedomoutpost.com/2013/09/senate-prepares-desecrate-everything-patriotic-americans-hold-dear-war-on-syria-vote-may-occur-911/#CDgRuKBAGAxMfWOt.99

No Bees, No Almonds - No Bees, No Pumpkin Pie!

No Bees, No Almonds - No Bees, No Pumpkin Pie!

Photo from National GeographicOne of my favorite sites to learn about Bees is Opal's site of course! Over the years we have heard so much about the population of Honey Bees diminishing. This past week I have received 4 different emails from different non-bee-specific sites with different findings and articles having to do with bees!

Earlier in the week one of the emails concentrated on Almonds. Saying if there were no bees - there would be no almonds. The other was from the Center for Food Safety saying that if there were no bees there would be no pumpkin pie. When you clicked on their campaign link it goes into more depth about just how much we NEED honeybees! Things like No Cranberries, No Pumpkins, No Green Beans...just about EVERY fruit and veggie we consume is because of BEES! So if the Center for Food Safety's campaign was timely for Thanksgiving it sure does make me think...this Thanksgiving I will include being THANKFUL for Honey Bees this year. Not that I wasn't to begin with but when you have the info right in front of you it sure does put things into prospective.

Another site I came across was The Business Insider. This site went into even more saying all fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds rely on bees! Nearly 1/3 of the world's crops depend on them! Where are they going? Why are they dieing? Well, various reasons! Pesticides, Disease, Parasites, Poor Weather, Environmental Conditions, etc. What can we do about it? Well, I for one, will continue to follow Bee Keepers Blogs like Opal. I will also be looking into local and regional people in our area to try and support them in some way. I, personally, don't eat (much) honey...I prefer Agave but that doesn't mean that vegetarians, vegans, and every day people that are meat eaters or otherwise shouldn't support your local bees! After all...you benefit and are fed because of what Bees do for you!

This Thanksgiving...one of the MANY things I am thankful for is Bees!

Friday, 20th September 2013: I am going to have to make an effort to catch up with near-real-time on my Postings. Once again I am rabbiting on about stuff that happened over a month ago. As I sit here the worst storm since 1987 2002 has just run through. The damage caused has still been pretty sobering though. Here in Cambridge trees are down and trains arent running. The national picture seems worse though. Apparently we were lucky here in the flatlands as it tracked slightly further north that originally anticipated. Should we blame it on climate-change caused by man-made causes – well such proof is hard to pin down. Unusual events are well unusual and so it takes a long time to build an accurate picture. In the mean-time, in my mind I reckon we (humankind) we certainly having an affect, we are causing energy to be added to the global system, and we do so at out peril. If I look at my own lifestyle compared with when I was a boy, my own energy consumption has increased hugely. When I was a boy we did not have central heating, in the winter my bedroom window iced up from the inside. We normally only had one source of heat – a Rayburn (fuelled by coke), in the kitchen, which also was used for cooking and providing hot water. Later in the day a fire would be lit in the living room. This meant that we tended to congregate in two rooms. So fewer lights were lit. Nowadays with central heating and air-conditioning (in offices and shops and cars) we consume far more energy maintaining our environment. Certainly it is more comfortable. Ive just remembered we had a radiant heater in the bathroom high up on the wall, it seemed next to useless. But woe betide us if it was accidentally left on… We had very little electronic equipment, with a valve radio, a valve television and one record player. Later on we did get transistor radios. However we had very little in the way of gadgetry that required re-charging (computers, monitors, WiFi, phones, MP3 players, tooth brushes, razors…) or equipment on standby. My “TV” actually consists of several boxes which all sit in standby, radios around the house, sit in standby – which all consumes more power than you think. As kids we never got taken to school by car and I reckon that people travelled shorter distances to work. This facilitated the use of buses and bicycles and walking. Looking at the National Travel Survey: 2011 “the average distance people travel per year has increased by 53%”. Although to counter balance the trend we have also seen improvements in efficiency with improved insulation of houses, our electronics is more power efficient, engines are more efficient and factories are also more efficient. (The type of industry in the UK has also changed.) So although the UK energy usage, according to this Government report has been rising from 1970 to around 2000, but seems to have dropped over the last few years (both household and total). (Some of the reduction is probably due to the down-turn and the exporting of some types of economic activity – eg. steel-making.) We reap what we sow though. So what has this to do with cycling. Well there seems to be quite a lot of political discussion about sustainable energy and the so-called green taxes. In my mind there are two issues we need to consider on a national basis, the first is the cost of energy, the other is our dependence on other countries for our energy. Apparently we face the highest risk of winter blackouts for almost a decade. Our gas supplies are also at risk apparently. Petrol stocks are also looking tight because of Industry structural changes. So those are some the the UKs weaknesses. What do we seem to be doing about it – well I havent a clue. Yes we do have energy subsidies and truckloads more Wind Turbines than we used to. Apparently the country has 6.8 GW of available wind power but it depends upon the wind and so is inherently variable. There pressure now seems to be on Solar – Burwell might get a Solar Farm and Soham has also been earmarked for a solar farm. The trouble is as humans we tend to quickly forget the past and focus on more of the now. Well I do anyway. So more of the now seems to be road building and house building. More roads be more cars, more pollution. Cambridge has an air quality problem according to the Cambridge City Council. The plans for the A14 upgrade could apparently also “push air pollution past legal limits”. According to this review of Air Quality Progress things havent really improved much. We also have a truck-load of houses planned for the area (e.g. Alconbury 5,000 homes, Waterbeach – 8,000 homes, Worts Causeway - 430 homes, Cambourne + 1,500 homes, Newmarket Road – 1,700 homes and Bourn airfield – no more than no more than 1,500 homes…) Not to mention all the housing near Trumpington and Northstowe – up to 10,000 homes. Cambridge could go from 120,000 to 170,000 inhabitants in a generation. The trouble is the thinking seems to be more of the same with lip-service being paid to the impact this influx will have on the region. There is an opportunity to be bold and transform the approach used. Everybody talks about cars – and roads – no we need to put sustainable and workable transport solutions in place. We need: High priority, high quality cycleways from population centres to work centres High safety cycle routes from population centres to schools. Connected transport for instance trains and cycles, trains and buses Streets safe for kids High quality broadband especially for the remote communities We need an overall plan and a Champion to lead this Instead we get more of the same thinking – a bit of a cycle path here, a bit of a shared path there, fines for cyclists on that pavement next to the dangerous road there. We have an inconsistent mess – where is the strategy? Meanwhile there seems to be some idea that there is a war on motorists – well given how much imported energy they burn, how much pollution they cause, how much street space they invade, how they terrorise vulnerable road users – I cant see much of a war going on. Phew – where did that rant come from. well it all started with me thinking about how crappy many cycle routes are, and how little attention they get and how much we of the system seems to be stacked in favour of motorists. Much of cycle infrastructure provision seems to be in the hands of a Charity – Sustrans – how weird is that. The rest seems to be random and haphazard. Part of my moan is that I got caught out by the p*ss-poor signage that we endure enjoy here in Cambridge. I was cycling into town from a ride around Wicken Fen along NCN51. Now usually I would head off through the PR to take the scenic route alongside the river. However I was pushed for time. So rather than delay by crossing the road to the shared-path on the other side I carried on along the right-hand shared-used path going into town. It was a mistake, first you have to cross the entrance to the aforementioned PR, then run the gauntlet alongside the Shell garage, where cars pulling in dont always seem to know which way they are going. Then you come to some traffic lights and wait for a while in order to cross the Marshalls Garage Service Road. Then you cross the Marshalls Garage access Road. Then you cross Ditton Lane. Every now and then you get clues that you are on a shared-used path. Then I made the mistake of assuming that I should carry on across Wadloes Road. Now this is a wide junction, I cant recall seeing any signage, but perhaps thats because I was focused on crossing the road. I found myself on the pavement the other side – which is the obvious direction when heading into town. However I had doubts about it being a shared-use path. So I crossed the the other side of the road – with some difficulty. As there is a separating kerb in the middle of the road. (Note in the last link ther4e is a cyclist who probably didnt realise that the path isnt shared-use.) That is what cyclists have to put up with, random routes that seemed to be designed to maximise the danger for cyclists whilst at the same time maximising the different types of cycle infrastructure that a cyclists might encounter. Just look at the Cambridge City Cycle map if you want to see just how higgledy-piggledy it is. To add to the confusion if you go further down the road to Ditton Walk and look back on the same side – there appears to be a cycle lane – well there is a painted white cycle logo on the pavement. A bit further along (by the Ditton Fields turn) there is another white cycle painted on the pavement. Now this is at odds with the City Cycle map and the OSM Cycle map. However using Streetview I cant see any END OF ROUTE signs. Thank you Cambridge City Council for making it so clear and obvious. Perhaps that stretch of pavement will be the next place for the PCCs cyclist crackdown. Lull the cyclist into a false sense of security, then do them for cycling on the pavement. What was it that the Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said “Shared use footpaths are clearly marked and our advice to cyclists would be that unless the footpath is clearly signed as such they should not use it as a cycleway”. That might work – but the signage needs to be well maintained – which it isnt. It might also help if there werent illogical gaps. Why does all this matter – well it is my life they are playing with. Cycling is not inherently dangerous – but Id still prefer not to be brought into conflict with other road and path users. It is not much fun being knocked of your bike by a car when cycling – all the high-viz and positioning in the world doesnt stop a SMISDY. The issue is that on good logical, planned routes there shouldnt be conflict whether it is shared-use or not. So it is not surprising that for pleasure I head away from the confusion that often abounds when cycling in Cambridge. You have to keep your wits about you mind. This time I headed off through Quy and along Station road and then along a byway towards Lode. I did stop to admire this freshly tilled field. Freshly prepared field – near Quy
Although one piece of Headlake Drove has been re-surfaced I was a little surprised that the cracks along the edge of the road hadnt been fixed at the same time. These cracks get larger at this time of year. The trouble is the lie at the edge of the road to catch out the unwary and wary cyclist alike. This is a narrow road and so if you were cycling along here you would naturally move to the edge of the road in the face of an oncoming vehicle. I would also be paying attention the vehicle rather than the road. Well if you did these cracks would probably tip you off your bike. So I will report them (I have also reported one on the other side of the road. (This is looking back towards High Bridge Farm). Here is the CTC web link. Cracks – Headlake Drove
As you can see wide enough for my wheels and deep as well. Cracks – Headlake Drove
The grass also disguises them. Cracks – Headlake Drove

About time – the is the NCN11 route as it heads through Wicken Fen – the path as been a mess for ages – I am pleased to see it is being sorted – although not all of it. Wicken Fen – NCN11 Path repairs
Why does it matter – well I have fallen off the side of Headlake Drove. A few years ago I was caught by a gust of wind – my wheel slipped of the edge and I lost my balance when I tried to get back onto the road. Fortunately I rolled and only damaged my pride. A friend recently had a similar experience – only he fractured his hip and has spent quite a few weeks on crutches. He has recently progressed from two crutches to one crutch and is looking forward to no crutches.
